Inter Collects at the Doves Gig
Inter Lads Collect for Factor 50
Just In Total raised at this event: £1211.44
"Hi guys Just to say a huge thanks for your help at the gig before Christmas. I really appreciate you rolling your sleeves up and getting stuck in! I’d have usually been there but I was in France visiting my daughter. Thanks for your help again"

Gillian Nuttall

A BIG thanks goes to Abinand Rajkumar, Rick and Phil Weller from Inter who helped our sponsor Andy Worthington out at short notice. Apparently the collection was a great success and we are waiting to hear back from Andy with regards to the final total collected.

We are also looking for a lot more players coming forward to help with this next time as Factor 50 have provided us with an excellent new kit so lets show even more support when we get this opportunity again next time.

Also if you have any fundraising ideas please email me them and we can put it to a poll what we decide to do to raise cash for this fantastic charity.

Factor 50 Updates
Factor 50 Updates

Fundraising began in earnest in August 2008, the money raised so far has helped pay the wages of a research scientist at The Christie and helped fund the laboratory research into a trial treatment for Malignant Melanoma to the point where they are able to apply go to actual clinical trials with this in 2010.

On a basic level the science involves using the bodies own defences to attack the cancerous cells by removing the cancer killing T cells from the body, modifying them, multiplying them billions of times and reintroducing them directly to the tumour site, the staff at the Christie have isolated cells that are particularly effective in attacking Melanoma genes. This is a non invasive procedure with none of the side effects of chemo or radiotherapy. Below is the latest update we have received from the research team at The Christie regarding the work they are doing.

Immune Therapies for Melanoma – Manchester Update October 2009

Cellular therapies for melanoma are being carried out within the Departments of Medical Oncology and Surgery based at the Christie Hospital. This work is proceeding at two core levels - laboratory-based research and clinical development.

Laboratory Research

The focus of our laboratory research has been developing the methods to isolate tumour infiltrating T lymphocytes (TIL). These T-cells have been used in clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) the United States with impressive responses (Dr S Rosenberg’s group). In order to develop clinical trial protocols locally, we have to demonstrate that these cells can be grown in our own laboratories. To date, we have cultured T-cells from twelve or more tumour samples confirming that the technique is robust and this work will form an intrinsic part of our clinical trial application. We are also seeking to incorporate newer techniques (such as a reduced period of culture to isolate the T-cells) and these are now under test.

Aside from the isolation of T-cells with natural tumour specificity, we have tested a melanoma specific gene therapy approach also developed by Dr Rosenberg and Dr R Morgan at the NIH. This involves the genetic modification of T-cells with a receptor that endows the T-cells with specificity for the MART-1 antigen expressed by the vast majority of melanomas. When T-cells are modified using a retroviral vector encoding this receptor, they can recognise and kill tumour cells that possess the relevant MART-1 antigen but they do not kill cells which are lacking MART-1. This receptor is being used in clinical trials at the NIH and we are generating our own pre-clinical data to support clinical trial applications to start in Manchester.

Clinical Development

Our clinical development is strongly focused upon the preparation of the necessary regulatory applications for TIL trials and upon the development of a new cell processing facility. For our current T-cell trials, cell processing is being carried out in collaboration with the National Blood Service (NHSBT). However, the laboratories where this work is being performed are to be closed. Consequently, we are developing a new facility based at the Manchester Incubator using up-to-date technology to permit the production of more cell products than was possible at the current facility.

The facility is in the process of being fitted out with the necessary equipment and our hope is that the Regulatory Authorities will inspect this facility early in 2010. Assuming a satisfactory outcome, we anticipate that cell processing will begin around March, 2010. Once open, one of our key priorities is to develop the TIL technology that is currently being used at a laboratory research level to reach standards that are acceptable for British and European Legislation in order to provide TIL’s for clinical trial. To achieve this, we need to develop some novel approaches in order to satisfy current legislation and, consequently, this will take some time. However, our over-riding intention is to have a process in place and available to support clinical trial applications for the last quarter of 2010 – of course, that is dependent on as few hitches as possible!

Inter nets exclusive Factor 50 sponsorship
After an incredibly successful first year, Factor 50 are delighted to announce the sponsorship of Inter Didsbury Football Club, who play in the Cheshire and Manchester Football League.

The charity was founded to raise the awareness of malignant melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer, and sits under the umbrella of The Christie Hospital in Manchester. The deal struck with the club means the charity will have exclusive shirt sponsorship of the team during the 2009/10 season.

A special thanks to Gill Nuttall and Andy Worthington for popping down.

Factor 50 founder Gillian Nuttall, and fundraiser Andy Worthington unveiled the new kit before the clubs first home game at Fog Lane on Sunday much to the delight of the team. This was followed by a great 4-1 win over rivals Manchester Valiant, adding to a successful start to the season.

Gillian Nuttall, PR & Marketing Manager at Manchester law firm Ralli, commented after the game: “Given that malignant melanoma has taken the lives of several sporting stars, we recognize that it is important to raise awareness in this area particularly with this age group of young adults. When Mark Moody from Inter Didsbury talked to us about sponsorship, it was an easy decision as they are helping spread the awareness amongst football players, their friends and families. Factor 50 and Inter Didsbury are hoping for a good season both on and off the pitch and we look forward to supporting them”.

Mark Moody of Inter Didsbury commented: “Over the summer months we have put a large amount of work into raising the profile of the club with a new website, www.interdidsbury.co.uk. When we were looking at sponsorship options it was decided that we wanted to support a worthy cause, and it was great that Gill and Factor 50 have agreed to work with us and provided the fantastic new kit. It is a charity which all of us can relate to and even during our first game we had the opposition asking about Factor 50. We look forward to working with Gill and the team going forward and have some great events planned to raise the profile of the charity.”

£5000 Raised for Childrens Adventure Farm Trust
Johnsons Rudyard to Roaches Challenge

Inter Didsbury defender Neil Johnson has recently completed a company sponsored charity event called the Rudyard to Roaches Challenge.

Neil and 7 others from work (Cargill) entered the 'Rudyard to Roaches Challenge' in the peak district where 9 companies entered teams that competed against each other at an outdoor activity centre to win a trophy! M&S, Tesco, Iceland, DHL and other companies like that were there.

The challenges included:

  • a 2 mile canoe
  • 10 mile mountain bike ride
  • a rock climb
  • and then a 5 mile run at the end.

Neils team completed the course in 1hr 48mins (came second by 3mins - so annoying!) but important thing was we raised a total of £5000 for the Childrens Adventure Farm Trust in cheshire who help disadvantaged and terminally ill kids enjoy what they can in life.

Goalkeeper Needed
Goalkeeper Needed

Our Best Wishes go out to Scott the new excellent goalkeeper that we finally found after three years because in his first competitive outing for Inter he broke two fingers in the call of duty. At 1-1 in our first game of the season he went in bravely to save at the feet of the opposition striker to keep us level and with the chance of winning the game, which we went onto do. His arm is in a cast and there may be talk of a plate being inserted into one of his fingers. We wish him all the best on a speedy recovery.

Gents we are needing a Goalkeeper for the forthcoming season. So if you know of anyone please bring them down to training or for one of our fixtures. Ideally it would be great to have two Goalkeepers for the season.
